Violent crime in Charlotte was up sharply during the first three months of the year, compared with a year ago. That's according to statistics out Wednesday from Charlotte Mecklenburg Police.

Random shootings aren’t what’s driving the tripling of murders in Charlotte this year. Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say it’s usually an argument between people who know each other that escalates into a fatal shooting. Twenty-two people have been murdered in the city since Jan. 1.

There were 62 murders in Charlotte last year, a big increase from 2014. Meanwhile, the new year already has seen its first homicide, a fatal shooting off Beatties Ford Road early Sunday. And with temperatures forecast in the mid-50s, the Carolina Panthers will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 4:25 today at Bank of America Stadium.

A federal grand jury Wednesday indicted alleged gang members on racketeering and murder charges. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says six members of the United Blood Nation gang played a role in the murder of Lake Wylie couple in October to prevent the husband from testifying against gang members in a robbery case.

The indictment names 12 people as members of the United Blood Nation gang. All are charged with racketeering, and six are charged in the murder of Doug and Debbie London.
