City Reports 2nd Case Of Illegal Chemical Dumping

There’s been another incident of illegal dumping into Charlotte’s waste water system. The city said in a statement at 4 o’clock this morning that more of a potentially cancer-causing chemical called PCBs has been found, this time in the Sugar Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, off Tyvola Road.  The illegal dumping is in the wastewater treatment system, and officials say it does NOT affect drinking water.

N.C. Files More Suits Over Coal-Ash Runoff

The state of North Carolina has filed more lawsuits against Duke Energy seeking to force the utility to clean up water pollution from coal ash at 12 power plants. The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources filed two lawsuits Friday in Wake and Mecklenburg counties. Those suits expand the state's litigation to all 14 of North Carolina's coal-fired plants.  Water tests at the 12 sites covered in the new suits showed chemical levels above what’s considered safe. State inspectors also have seen seeping liquid that’s not allowed under Duke’s permits.

McCrory defends N.C. and his leadership

Gov. Pat McCrory is defending North Carolina and his leadership, following an editorial in The New York Times last week that criticized the state's Republican leadership and recent legislative actions.

In a July 10 editorial headlined “The Decline of North Carolina,” The Times called North Carolina's current state leadership a “demolition derby tearing down years of progress in public education, tax policy, racial equality” and voting rights.
