Adams Wins 12th District Democratic Primary

State Representative Alma Adams of Greensboro won her party's nomination for the 12th Congressional District seat. She carried 43 percent of the vote, which put her above the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff in the crowded Democratic primary.

The atmosphere was jubilant last night as dozens of supporters waited for Adams to arrive at a Greensboro restaurant.

At just after 9 o'clock, she walked in, smiling broadly.

James Mitchell Withdraws From 12th Congressional District Race

James Mitchell and supporters held yard signs at a special city council meeting on April 7 announcing the selection of Dan Clodfelter as the new mayor of Charlotte following Patrick Cannon's resignation. He was being considered for the position. He announced he is no longer running for congress on April 14.

 Less than two months after officially filing to run for Congress, former Charlotte city councilman James "Smuggie" Mitchell says he is no longer a candidate for the 12th congressional district seat.

McCrory: Not Many Options For Special Election For Mel Watt's Seat

Governor Pat McCrory announced the special election for Congressman Mel Watt's seat will coincide with the general election schedule.

Governor Pat McCrory says he didn't have many options for when to hold a special election for the 12th congressional district.  Mel Watt resigned from his seat on January 6 after he was sworn in as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

So Far, Six Enter Competition For Watt's Coveted House Seat

The 12th Congressional District was redrawn in 2011. A special election cannot be announced until Mel Watt (NC-12) formally resigns from his position.

Now that Congressman Mel Watt has been confirmed as director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, there will soon be an open seat in the 12th district.

So far, there are at least six candidates – all African-American Democrats – who are competing for his office in a special election. When that election will take place remains unclear.
