Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation

Mecklenburg County hasn’t had a public beach in about 40 years. So when the new beach at Ramsey Creek Park in Cornelius opened two weeks ago, there was a lot of pent up demand.

So many people showed up Memorial Day weekend that traffic jammed nearby streets and hundreds were turned away.  Neighbors complained.  So county park officials will meet with neighbors Thursday to talk about how they're responding.

Coyote Sightings Drop, But...

Aug 5, 2015

The number of reported coyote sightings in Mecklenburg County has dropped dramatically in the last three years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there are fewer coyotes among us.

Mecklenburg County is lifting its 30-year ban on public swimming at Lake Norman - possibly by the summer of 2015.

Currently only people with boats or lakefront property have access to swim. A series of drowning deaths in the 1970's prompted the swimming ban.

"Over the past few years there's been a lot of growing requests and need and recognition that 'Yes, we need to have public swimming on our lakes,'" says Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Deputy Director Michael Kirschman. "We have three major lakes - all in Mecklenburg County - with no public swimming facilities."
