During Graduation Season, Speeches Aim At Grads

It’s college graduation season, and graduates around the region are hearing words of wisdom from a parade of speakers- from the governor to professional athletes to entertainers. 

About 2,500 students got bachelor’s degrees and hundreds more received advanced degrees at UNC Charlotte on Saturday.  Governor Pat McCrory was the commencement speaker at his alma mater, Catawba College, where 191 students graduated.

Historic Charlotte Offers A Chance To Go Inside 'Mad Men' Era Homes

Mid-century modern architecture is not known for being flashy. Architects in the 1950s and 60s took their inspiration from nature, designing unadorned homes with low sloped roofs and large windows. They may not stand out from the outside, but inside it’s a different story. Saturday’s Mad About Modern Home tour  offers a chance to go inside 8 of the city’s mid-century gems. Kitten In East Charlotte Tests Positive For Rabies

Mecklenburg County officials have confirmed the county’s first case of rabies this year in a house pet.  A kitten in the 28205 zip code, which includes Plaza Midwood, tested positive for the disease. 

Veterinarian Margurette Straley  examined the kitten this week, before the county’s public health department euthanized and tested it. 

"It would scream and growl like a grown cat, so much that you would take a double take and go, “What is in that box?”  It was obviously very painful," says Straley.

After Nine Months, B-Cycle Is Catching On In Charlotte

Charlotte’s bike sharing program, B-Cycle, has been up and running for nine months now. You’ve probably noticed the bike racks in and near Uptown, marked with the circular red, white, and blue “B” logo. WFAE’s Duncan McFadyen reports the program is taking off.

Northeastern-Charlotte Doubles Graduate Programs

Northeastern-Charlotte will be adding nine masters and two doctoral degree programs this fall. It currently offers eight masters programs.

Boston-based Northeastern University opened its Center City campus in January 2012 with eight masters programs. Now, the University is adding seven masters degrees and two doctoral degrees. The programs were approved two weeks ago by the UNC Board of Governors.
