The North Carolina Department of Transportation has dropped plans to build noise walls along the Brookshire Freeway side of I-277 in uptown Charlotte.

A close vote that narrowly gave the state Department of Transportation approval to put up a noise wall along I-277 is now under review.

The votes are in on the controversial noise walls proposed for part of I-277. The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it’s moving forward with one section; the other section has been voted down. The next move comes tonight from Charlotte City Council, who along with other groups has said it’s concerned the wall would block views of uptown.

Uptown Loop Study Identifies Safety Risks

A year-long study of the Uptown loop has been completed and will be presented to City Council Monday night. It's the first step to get funding for improvements to target safety.

Cheryl Myers is the senior vice president for planning and development for Charlotte Center City Partners. In 2011, her group unveiled a set of recommendations to City Council including doing a study of the city's interstate highway system. The city-commissioned Uptown Loop Study is the first comprehensive study of the loop since it was completed in 1981. 

Why Did The Deer Cross The Road?

A portion of I-277 was closed Thursday morning by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police when a deer was stranded in the middle of the roadway.
