Charlotte 49ers Marching Band Will Join Team In 2015

UNC Charlotte's football team is gaining momentum but fans can't help but think something is missing.  The school recently announced plans to build a marching band by 2015.

Amidst the running, the hitting, the yelling, and the whistles of practice, is the occasionally cry of “Game Week!”

The UNC Charlotte 49ers football team is excited. The team plays its first game on Saturday, at home, against the Campbell Camels, more than five years after the school’s Board of Trustees approved the program. The team has been practicing for more than a year. Wide receiver Mikel Hunter says he’s looking forward to just playing against someone who’s not on his own team.

When I first moved here, there was one billboard that I found really confusing. It was for the new '49ers football team at UNC Charlotte. 

The only 49ers I know of are 3,000 miles away … in San Francisco.

Nationally, the Panthers aren'’t one of the NFL'’s most popular teams. In fact, try 4th least popular, according to an ESPN Sports Poll taken last year--not too surprising, considering the team is only heading into its 18th season of existence.

While there were no helmets or pads, there was a lot of running.

About 85 football players, all decked out in their squeaky clean t-shirts, shorts, and cleats ran full field sprints.  For the next three weeks, they’ll be doing these daily conditioning drills and learning their position techniques.

The first game is not until August 31st, 2013, over a year away. Because of that, head coach Brad Lambert says one of his biggest challenges is to keep it these practices creative.
