Primaries are gearing up in North Carolina and the voter registration deadline is fast approaching. Here's what voters in Mecklenburg County need to know in preparation for the elections.

U.S. Rep. Alma Adams (D-Charlotte) formally kicked off her campaign for re-election Sunday and announced endorsements from local elected officials.

Adams represents the 12th District, which includes an area from the Iredell County line south to south Charlotte. She's a former teacher and a state legislator now in her second term.

There is a simple, demographic fact in North Carolina politics: women are underrepresented in the General Assembly.

They make up 51.4 percent of the state's population. But hold just a quarter of the seats in North Carolina's House and Senate.

The candidate filing window for the 2018 election season is now open. So too are efforts to break a political glass ceiling.

Ten incumbent state legislators from the Charlotte area were among the first to file Monday as candidates began signing up for the 2018 election. Other races on the ballot this year include Congress, district attorney, county commission and other county positions.
