The next mayor of Charlotte will get an annual salary of $23,000, an expense account worth up to $14,800 and an office atop the Government Center with truly spectacular views of the city. Obviously these are nice perks, but hardly the reason eight candidates are running to be mayor of the city.

A field of eight mayoral candidates is now down to two. Jennifer Roberts beat Democratic incumbent Dan Clodfelter by nearly 10 percent.  She faces Republican Edwin Peacock in the general election.

Next Tuesday, a runoff election will decide if Dan Clodfelter or Jennifer Roberts will be the Democrat’s nominee for mayor of Charlotte. On Wednesday morning, the candidates faced off at the McGlohon Theater, in a live debate on Charlotte Talks.

A conference hall at Queens University was filled Thursday night with spectators. They gathered to hear the top six candidates for Charlotte’s next mayor debate the future of the city.

Early voting begins Thursday in Charlotte’s mayoral primary and a new poll shows there are clear front-runners for the two major parties.  With voting set to begin ahead of primary day, Sept. 15, The Charlotte Observer reports that Democrat Jennifer Roberts has support from 39 percent of likely primary voters, just short of the 40 percent needed to avoid a runoff. Current Mayor Dan Clodfelter is a distant second at 21 percent.

Charlotte’s most recently elected mayors have had quite the trajectory—to the governor’s mansion, U.S. Cabinet, and federal prison. In total, the city has gone through five mayors in as many years. This year, six Democratic candidates are vying for the office.

Wednesday, the North Carolina Senate tentative approved its $21.5 billion state budget. The final vote will take place Thursday.

The budget vote was largely party line, but there was a surprise. A key Republican budget writer voted against the plan.

Local leaders are still hoping North Carolina lawmakers will find a way to replace money lost from the elimination of the business license tax. Governor Pat McCrory reiterated his support for that Monday.  But after more than a year and despite that talk, prospects in Raleigh remain uncertain.


New Transit Needs New Revenue, Says Charlotte Mayor

The City of Charlotte will need to come up with more money for transit projects, Mayor Dan Clodfelter announced during his State of the City speech Tuesday morning. The city has proposed future extension of the street car and possible rail and bus lines to the north and southeast. But Clodfelter says the state won’t support those projects as it has in the past.
