Charlotte Douglas International Airport

The much-anticipated arrival of Southwest Airlines at Charlotte-Douglas International Airport will not bring more flights or cheaper fares, says Aviation Director Jerry Orr.

Southwest will fly six flights a day from Charlotte beginning next April. But AirTran - which Southwest is replacing -  flew seven flights daily, including three to Atlanta. Southwest will fly to Baltimore, Chicago, Houston and Orlando, but not Atlanta.

A taxi will be the first impression many DNC attendees get of Charlotte and the city has gone to great lengths to make sure it's a good one. Last year, most cab companies were kicked out of the airport and strict rules implemented for those that remain. |

Angry taxi drivers unsuccessfully sued to block the move and complained they would lose their livelihoods. WFAE's Julie Rose reports on the outcome of that controversial change.

And occasionally, a few of them stop for a shoe shine. At Concourse D, there's one shoeshiner with a thick African accent, a soul patch, and an interesting story to tell.
