Hundreds of marchers, from high school bands to dancers to community leaders, marched through uptown Charlotte in Saturday in the annual Martin Luther King Day Parade.  The parade was part of a weekend full of events for the King Day Holiday.

Six Die In Mobile Home Fire

Six people died early Saturday in a mobile home fire in the Sampson County town of Garland, east of Fayetteville. Sampson County deputies said the fire was reported around 1 a.m.   Authorities are investigating, but a captain with the sheriff’s department said it appears the fire was an accident.

Since it first opened, UNC Charlotte's football stadium has had a zero-waste initiative. That means almost no trash. Everything that can be … is recycled or composted.

Part of that initiative is a three and a half feet-tall robot called RecycleBot. Ten engineering students worked on the robot this spring.  


Charlotte 49ers Marching Band Will Join Team In 2015

UNC Charlotte's football team is gaining momentum but fans can't help but think something is missing.  The school recently announced plans to build a marching band by 2015.

UNC Charlotte officially has a football team. The 49ers started their legacy with a 52-7 trouncing of the Campbell Camels on Saturday. The score was the cherry on top for fans just glad to have a team.

Amidst the running, the hitting, the yelling, and the whistles of practice, is the occasionally cry of “Game Week!”

The UNC Charlotte 49ers football team is excited. The team plays its first game on Saturday, at home, against the Campbell Camels, more than five years after the school’s Board of Trustees approved the program. The team has been practicing for more than a year. Wide receiver Mikel Hunter says he’s looking forward to just playing against someone who’s not on his own team.

Fall Sports Preview

Fall is in the air and so are a variety of balls. Footballs are being slung on fields all over America and right down the street at Panther Stadium. So are baseballs as the major league season rounds third and heads for home. Basketballs will be bouncing soon in Time Warner Arena and on Tobacco Road. Fall begins a very busy professional and college sports season and we’ll take a look at the Panthers, Bobcats, Hurricanes hockey and we’ll also check in on the progress of UNC Charlotte football and the prospect of uptown baseball.
