In the Charlotte area, BlueCross BlueShield and Novant Health are setting up a new payment program for knee replacements that they say will save patients money. It's called a bundled payment program, and you could be hearing that phrase a lot more in the future.

The state’s largest health insurance provider is making some medical costs public for the first time. BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina yesterday unveiled a website that lets anyone search how much doctors and hospitals charge for some of the most common non-emergency services.

North Carolinians who plan to sign up for health insurance online through the federal exchange, or marketplace, can now get an idea of how much it'll cost. But those costs are difficult to compare to current rates and tricky to compare to other states as well.

Blue Cross Blue Shield released information Thursday about premiums it'll charge on the marketplace. And a smaller insurer has released similar data.

Blue Cross Blue Shield is under fire from advocacy groups over its contract to administer the state health plan for employees. A week ago, the state revealed it paid Blue Cross more than $97 million last year to administer the health plan for state employees and process 9.4 million claims. That breaks down to $10 per claim, compared to an average of 41 cents the state paid another firm to process Medicaid claims in 2007.
