Mecklenburg Voters Say 'No' To Sales Tax

Mecklenburg County voters did not approve a quarter cent sales tax that would have gone mostly to raise CMS employee pay.  Sixty-one percent of voters said 'no' to that.  

The sales tax didn’t have much organized opposition.  The idea just didn’t take. It lost in precincts throughout the county, save for one in Davidson and a few neighborhoods just southeast of uptown. 

A group called Together 4 Meck sprung into action to advocate for the tax.

County Budget And Referendum Pass Amidst Bickering

If there was a word of the night at yesterday’s Mecklenburg County Commissioners meeting, it would have been “teachers.” Not surprising since the board was set to approve its $1.3 billion budget, which includes more money for schools and a referendum for this November that would add money for teacher pay. The meeting turned terse and politically divisive and even had a bit of a budgetary surprise.

Cultural Life Task Force Nearly Set To Release Recommendations For Arts Funding

A group of community and arts leaders in Charlotte is still working to develop recommendations on how to keep arts-and-cultural organizations afloat in the future.  

The Cultural Life Task Force was originally scheduled to release its report by February, but that’s been postponed until June, Task Force co-chair Valecia McDowell told WFAE's Mark Rumsey.

Making Art 'Pop' On Highway Billboards

Monique Luck used pieces of paper, lace, glass beads and acrylic paint to create this piece called, 'I see my daughters'. Luck says she spent about 50 hours over the last few months working on this piece. It's inspired by a photo of one of her sisters. When her mother saw the photo she said, 'I see my daughters'.

Sometimes highway billboards are an eyesore. But the Arts and Science Council and a group called ArtPop are trying to change that by placing the work of 20 local artists on billboards. Fifteen have already been chosen. And this week, the public can vote on the last five artists.
