The Middle Class

The Middle Class The very rich and the very poor are often the subjects of modern presidential campaigns. The rich come up every time there is a battle over tax reform and who should pay their fair share and the poor are often in the middle of battles over so-called entitlement programs and budget priorities. But for the vast millions of Americans in the middle class, this may be the most important election in decades. The Middle Class is being discussed with great fervor on both sides and most experts agree that the next President will be the candidate who appeals most to these voters.

Air

Air: The Restless Shaper of the World by William Bryant Logan

Air is all around us, and we breathe 30,000 times a day. We depend on air for life itself, but how much do we know about it? Author William Bryant Logan has asked, and attempted to answer many questions about air that we might never have thought to consider. He’s put them into his new book, Air: The Restless Shaper of the World. He’ll join us to talk about the many ways we interact with air, and the many forms that air takes.

The Campaigns And The Economy

Everyone remembers the now famous phrase "it's the economy, stupid" that came out of Bill Clinton's first campaign for President. That phrase could be in full effect during the current Presidential campaign as well but the two candidates certainly see the issue from two different perspectives. Add to that the recent addition of congressman Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's Vice Presidential candidate. Ryan is the Chairman of the House Budget Committee and has what some call "radical" views to reform the federal budget and revive the economy.

In the years just after the attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, Lower Manhattan leaders held an open competition to find the best design for a World Trade Center memorial. Over 5,000 entries came in from all over the world, and in the end, New York resident and architect Michael Arad’s design was the winner. He titled the memorial “Reflecting Absence.” We’ll talk about the design, its construction and what he thinks about the finished memorial, which he hoped would be “stoic, defiant and compassionate.”

Cyndy Etler And Straight Inc.

Straighting: A Memoir by Cyndy Etler

Cyndy Etler was a bad girl. A drinker and drug user. A lost cause. At least that's how her mother thought of her even though Cyndy had only drunk alcohol once and tried pot three times. Abuse forced her to run away and her mother's response was to send Cyndy to a "tough love" facility for troubled teens. The program was called Straight Inc. and its practices have been the subject of lawsuits, documentaries and a great deal of controversy. The program is closed now but those who created it have spawned other programs that continue today.

Young People and Politics

Young voters came out in record numbers in 2008 to elect Barack Obama as President. Four years later, a poll from Pew Research Center this summer says Americans under the age of 30 are less engaged in the upcoming election and in politics in general than they were in 2008. Are the parties and politicians listening to this particular voter group? Do young people feel like they are being heard?
