World Refugee Day

UN Photo/Mark Garten

In 2012, 618 refugees resettled in Charlotte. And tomorrow is World Refugee Day. It is also the day that Jose Martinez, a refugee from Cuba, will be sworn in as a U.S. citizen. Jose fled the communist country as a twelve year old and resettled with his father in America. But the resettlement process starts with an extensive application and countless interviews. Then there is the process of actually resettling in a new country. That process is made possible by non-profit organizations and our government. We’ll speak with Jose and others about living as a refugee and helping refugees.
