In Women's Month Campaign, Grubhub Promotes Female Chefs, Restaurants

Grubhub, one of the nation’s largest online and mobile food ordering companies, has launched a campaign to highlight and promote restaurants led by women nationwide, including in Charlotte, for Women's History Month.

As part of the “RestaurantHER" campaign, the company has committed to donate $1 each, and up to $1 million, for every customer’s pledge to order takeout or delivery from restaurants led by women now through the end of March. According to the website, “the first $100,000 will go to the Women Chefs & Restaurateurs (WCR) organization to advance women in the culinary industry” and the rest of the contributions will go toward other “community initiatives.”

The campaign website also includes an interactive map that customers can use to identify restaurants near them that are owned, co-owned or have kitchens led by women that are available for takeout or delivery. Customers can do so by entering their zip codes into the map. A few Charlotte-area restaurants on the map include Sithara Indian Restaurant near University City, Cantina 1511 in Uptown and Pike’s Soda Shop in South End, among others. Customers can also add women-led restaurants to the map if they do not see them represented.

According to the campaign website, women make up only 19 percent of chefs and 7 percent of head chefs in the culinary industry. The site also claims women chefs earn 28 percent less in base pay than their male counterparts. Grubhub said it recognized the gender disparity and “saw need for serious change.”

Grubhub is also partnering with WCR, an organization that gives resources to women seeking an advanced culinary education and looking to become food service leaders, to develop digital tools to help women navigate challenges they face in the restaurant industry.
