Winthrop Pres. DiGiorgio To Retire In 2013

Watch the video announcement DiGiorgio made to Winthrop University faculty and students on Tuesday. The long-time president of Winthrop University announced today he will retire in 2013. That will make 24 years in the post for Tony DiGiorgio. During his tenure, Winthrop transitioned from a college to a university, launched its first-ever capital campaign and increased enrollment diversity. Winthrop Board of Trustees Chairman Dalton Floyd says he'd have been happy to see DiGiorgio stay longer. "We hated to see him leave, no question about that," says Floyd. "I can understand it with his age and the time and that sort of thing, but he's gonna really be missed. He's just done an excellent job for us." DiGiorgio is 71 years old. In a statement to staff and students, he said he's comfortable retiring now that the economy seems to be rebounding and state funding has stabilized, albeit at a lower level. Funding cuts led to layoffs, forced furloughs and tuition hikes at Winthrop over the least several years. Floyd says Winthrop's board will spend the next year looking for a replacement to carry on with DiGiorgio's vision for the university. For his part, DiGiorgio plans to stay in Rock Hill and consult for Winthrop as a distinguished service professor.
