Wilmore Elementary Up For Historic Landmark Vote

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission

Charlotte City Council members this evening will consider approving Historic Landmark status for the old Wilmore Elementary school, near Uptown.

Wilmore Elementary opened in 1925 on West Boulevard in what was then one of the city’s emerging “streetcar suburbs.”  The school became a focal point of cultural and social life in the Wilmore community.

Since the 1960s, the neighborhood has undergone a series of demographic and economic changes, with a wave of revitalization over the past 15 years.

Additions to the original two-story brick building were built in 1948 and 1970. No classes have been held at the school since 1978, but CMS still owns the property.

In November, the Charlotte Mecklenburg Historic Landmarks Commission voted to protect the old school by giving it historic landmark status.

If City Council members agree with the designation, no significant changes to the building could be made without approval from the Historic Landmarks Commission. The council will hold a public hearing on  Wilmore Elementary and two other historic designations Monday at the start of its zoning meeting, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the government center.
