Seven volunteers have been assembled to investigate how the United Way of Central Carolinas ended up paying its CEO more than a million dollars last year. The group is led by Charlotte attorney Bob Sink who says he narrowed a field of more than 60 recommendations down to six people who will join him on the volunteer review panel. They include a prominent Charlotte attorney, a judge, an HR consultant, the President of Davidson College and a local CPA who serves as the chair of Goodwill Industries in Charlotte. The sixth member of the group is retired teacher Jane Spainhour. She's the one Sink says will represent the general public in evaluating the decisions that led to the CEO pay scandal. "Ms. Spainhour has been teaching school for 22 years and I think certainly reflects that view and all of us have the same interest in the community an the tension between what you pay to draw a capable executive and what's appropriate for a nonprofit organization," says Sink. Sink say the panel will spend several months reviewing the CEO pay scandal and make recommendations by the end of the year.
