UNC Rejects Speaking Request By White Nationalist Richard Spencer

UNC Chapel Hill has denied a request by white nationalist Richard Spencer to speak on campus. Chancellor Carol Folt said the university had received a request from Spencer's group, the National Policy Institute, to rent space on the campus.  She said the decision to reject the request was based on safety concerns.

Spencer is a leader of the white nationalist movement and spoke at a demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia that turned violent earlier this month.

"We are not willing to risk anyone's safety in light of these known risks," said Folt in a message to the university community.

Several universities have turned down similar recent requests by Spencer citing security concerns. They include Penn State University, the University of Florida, and Michigan State University.
