UNC Chapel Hill has tallied the amount it has spent on providing security around the Confederate monument Silent Sam over the past year.

The Raleigh News & Observer reports the university has spent $390,000 dollars, which the university says includes overtime and contingency staffing as well as assistance from outside law enforcement agencies.

The school estimates it has spent another $3,000 cleaning the statue due to vandalism. The university says protecting students around the monument is their primary goal and protecting the statue comes secondary to the safety of students.

The statue has been a source of controversy and protest on the campus over the last year after the violent clash between protestors in Charlottesville, Virginia.
