Two Killed In Crash On Eastway Drive

A woman and her 3-year-old child were killed in a four-vehicle crash that shut down a portion of Eastway Drive this morning. Police have charged one of the drivers involved in the crash with sparking the wreck.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police charged 22-year-old Montressa Jorice Gray with two counts of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, expired registration and an unsafe movement.

Police say Gray was traveling northeast along Eastway Drive toward North Tryon Street in the right-hand lane in a 2013 Honda Civic when she changed lanes to the left-hand lane and sideswiped a 2006 Ford. That action caused the Ford to cross over the double yellow dividing lines and strike Alicia McFarland's vehicle, a 2017 Hyundai, head on. The Hyundai, which had been traveling southwest on Eastway Drive, was struck a second time by a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado. McFarland was pronounced dead at the scene.

MEDIC responded and transported McFarland's child to Carolina Medical Center Main, but the child died en route to the hospital, according to CMPD.

Sixteen firefighters also responded to the scene. MEDIC says three other people were injured in the incident, two were brought to the hospital. They all had minor injuries.

Police also say the child was seated in a child seat that was installed properly, but the child was not restrained in the seat.

CMPD says speed and alcohol are not a factor in the crash.
