Police in Shelby Thursday arrested the man wanted for killing nine people in a church in Charleston, South Carolina. The suspect, Dylann Storm Roof, had fled almost 250 miles when he was caught.
Authorities believe the 21-year old suspect acted alone. The arrest followed an intense all-night manhunt for Roof after the Wednesday night shootings at Emmanuel AME church in downtown Charleston. Police said Roof was taken into custody after an officer pulled him over along state highway 74, west of Shelby.
Charleston Police Chief Greg Mullen says officers got a tip from another driver. "The citizen just saw a vehicle that they felt like was suspicious and they did exactly what we ask citizens to do," said Mullen. The police chief says the suspect was alone in the car and cooperated with the officer who stopped him.
During a news conference in Charleston today, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley expressed both grief and resolve in the wake of the church shootings.
