Sun. Headlines: Hearing Tue. on I-77 Suit

The anti-toll group Widen I-77 will get its first day in court Tuesday as it tries to halt plans to widen I-77 north of Charlotte using toll lanes. The group filed suit January 20th, seeking temporary and permanent injunctions to stop the project. Our news partner CorneliusNews.netreportsthat a judge in Alamance County is scheduled to begin hearing motions on the suit Tuesday from Widen I-77 and defendants in the case, the DOT and its private contractor, I-77 Mobility Partners.

2 SHOT AT MUSIC FACTORY

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say someone fired several shots Saturday night inside the Label nightclub at the NC Music Factory in Charlotte where a CIAA Weekend rap party was going on. Two people were hit by the gunfire, and treated for non life threatening injuries.  The shootings happened around 7 o’clock at the club, one of several in the music factory complex. One woman victim was found at the scene and taken to Carolinas Medical Center. A short time later, another victim showed up at the hospital, after driving there. Police are investigating, and ask anyone with information to call their tip line at 704-432-TIPS or Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.  

DUKE RAISES TUITION

Duke University students will be paying more next fall, after the school’s trustees approved tuition hikes on Saturday. Undergraduate tuition is rising 4 percent, while graduate and professional schools will charge an average of 4.4 percent more. Undergraduate tuition will be nearly $48,000. Add in room, board and fees and the total will be almost $63,300. Duke gives half its students some kind of financial help. The private university said it expects to spend more than $130 million on undergraduate financial aid next year. Pursuing a master of divinity degree will cost $21,500 annually, and an MBA nearly $61,000.  A year of law school will cost $56,500 and medical school nearly $54,000.

NEW IN CHARLOTTE: ‘SMART’ PARKING METERS

The City of Charlotte last week finished installing 600 new parking meters in downtown, South End and Elizabeth areas. The the solar-powered “smart” meters accept credit cards, coins and Charlotte coins – special parking tokens the city first introduced in 1999. Parking in Charlotte’s business districts costs 25 cents for 15 minutes, while the Charlotte Coin pays for an hour. Most on-street spaces in the city allow up to 2 hours of parking. 

FATAL WRECK ON STATESVILLE ROAD

One man was killed and another had minor injuries in a head-on crash on Statesville Road in north Charlotte Saturday morning around 10:30.  Charles Bass the 2nd died when his 2013 Mazda crossed the center line and struck a 2004 Ford Van. The van’s driver had only minor injuries. Police said Bass was non wearing a seatbelt and alcohol may have been a factor in the crash. 

NASCAR IN ATLANTA – MINUS No. 44

NASCAR’s Sprint Cup is in Atlanta Sunday, with the Sprint Cup Folds of Honor Quick Trip 500 starting at around 1:15. Joey Logano, who won last week’s Daytona 500, has the pole position.   

One driver not in the field is Travis Kvapil, driver of the Team XTREME No.l 44 car. Police in Hampton, Georgia, say they have found a NASCAR Sprint Cup race car stolen from a hotel parking lot near Atlanta Motor Speedway Friday. The theft of Team XTreme’s Number 44 forced Kvapil to miss qualifying and withdraw from today’s 500 mile race at the speedway.

The car and its hauler were found Saturday in Gwinnett County, northeast of Atlanta.  The team had tweeted a pictured of team owner John Cohen standing in front of the No. 44 Chevrolet.

LIVINGSTONE, VIRGINIA STATE WIN CIAA

At yesterday’s CIAA basketball tournament in Charlotte, Livingstone ran away with the men’s championship, beating Winston-Salem State 106 to 91. The women’s title went to Virginia State, which easily beat Lincoln, 73-49.      In other local college basketball:

  • UNC Charlotte’s 49ers beat Rice by a point, 77 to 76, on a driving shot in the lane by senior Terrence Williams.
  •  A sellout crowd in Davidson watched the Wildcats win their seventh game in a row, 77 to 66 over George Washington. The win keeps Davidson in a three-way tie for first in the Atlantic 10, with Dayton and Rhode Island.
  • No. 4 Duke beat Syracuse, 73-54.
  • No. 15 North Carolina beat Miami, 73 to 64.
