An employee died after falling into an open tank at an AkzoNobel chemical plant in Salisbury early Saturday morning.
According to WBTV, the employee fell during a loading operation around 4 a.m. Crews entered the tank following the accident and discovered that the employee had died. The name of the employee has not been released.
Both Rowan County EMS and the Salisbury Fire Department responded to the incident.
"We are terribly saddened by this loss and our thoughts and prayers are with the employee’s family and the rest of the employees at our site in Salisbury. At this time, we are working with first responders to further investigate the incident. Our primary concern is providing support for the family and ensuring the continued well-being and safety of our other employees," a company spokesperson told WBTV.
According to WBTV, the company has suspended production and OSHA has been called in to further investigate the accident.
