Retiring Loaves & Fishes Director Reflects On Hunger In Charlotte

loavesandfishes.org

Since 1975, the non-profit organization Loaves & Fisheshas helped put meals on the table for Charlotte-area residents facing a food crisis. The program works with government and non-profit agencies to supply 20 food pantries throughout Mecklenburg County. Last year, Loaves & Fishes served more than 78,000 people.

Beverly Howard, who has been executive director of Loaves & Fishes for 27 years, recently announced that she will retire in June of next year.  "It's such a rewarding thing to go home at night and know that because of something I had a part of – I didn’t do it, but I had part of it – there a hundred families sitting down to meals in Charlotte that wouldn’t have had them," says Howard.  "I don’t know of many jobs that give you that kind of satisfaction."

WFAE's Mark Rumsey spoke with Howard about her tenure with Loaves & Fishes, and about how she describes the "face of hunger" in Charlotte.

Mark Rumsey grew up in Kansas and got his first radio job at age 17 in the town of Abilene, where he announced easy-listening music played from vinyl record albums.
