Preserving the World's Seed Stocks

Tanner Latham

WFAE

On Charlotte Talks we have explored local farming, place-based cuisine and the farm-to-fork locavore movement, but everything to do with food starts with one crucial element; the seed. At the turn of the century there were over 7,000 seed varieties commercially available. One of our guests today says that 94 percent of those seeds are gone forever. Monoculture, or planting just one variety, led to the devastating potato famine in Ireland and we may be in danger of catastrophic crop failure again soon. We'll learn about seed savers, seed exchangers, and seed bankers who hope to save the world's supply of seeds. We dig for the truth about the world's seed supply, when Charlotte Talks.
