Charlotte City Council members Monday night could approve a revised plan for providing police protection in some unincorporated areas of Mecklenburg County.
Since consolidating their police departments in the mid-1990s, the city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have had a funding agreement for CMPD to handle police calls outside city and town limits. But last April, county commissioners voted to end that contract, citing long response times and other concerns with police services. The existing agreement between the city and county expires at the end of June.
The new agreement that is up for a vote by City Council members Monday night spells out CMPD’s responsibilities to provide police coverage in unincorporated areas outside Charlotte, Mint Hill, and Davidson. Under the five-year deal, the county would pay CMPD $14 million a year for those services. The towns of Huntersville, Cornelius and Pineville want to patrol their own surrounding unincorporated areas, known as extra-territorial jurisdictions.
Charlotte Council members will also consider a list of federal legislative priorities for 2018. Among them are efforts to increase the city’s supply of affordable housing, obtain more funding for infrastructure, and improve Doppler weather radar coverage for the Charlotte area.
And, Mayor Vi Lyles will read a proclamation declaring this Friday, “Billy Graham Day,” honoring the Charlotte-born evangelist who died last week at age 99. His funeral will be held Friday at the Billy Graham Library. Graham will be buried in the library gardens next to his wife, Ruth, who died in 2007.
