Police officers fatally shot an armed man Sunday night inside Novant Health's Huntersville Medical Center. The Huntersville Police Department says officers were called to the hospital on Gilead Road at 11:40 p.m. after a man fired several shots.
The department says upon arrival, hospital staff and witnesses directed officers to the area where the man with the gun was last seen. During a search of the area officers encountered the man, who has not been identified, and perceived him to be a threat.
The officers fired several shots striking the man. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured. Huntersville police have requested the State Bureau of Investigation begin an investigation into the shooting. The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
"Without a doubt, this is a tragic situation. Our hearts and prayers go out to the loved ones of this individual," Novant said on Twitter this morning. The hospital network said it cannot provide any more information because it is an active investigation.
