More than 200,000 people are expected to attend the PGA Championship taking place at the Quail Hollow Club in south Charlotte next week. And that’s going to mean a lot of traffic.
The PGA Championship takes place from August 7 - 13. And city officials say that will bring backups and road closures in south Charlotte.
Joe Yanicak with the city’s Department of Transportation says those attending the tournament should use mass transit, carpool, bike, walk or use ride sharing programs like Lyft and Uber.
"The message is for residents and people going to the tournament to allow themselves some extra time this year," Yanicak said. "It’s a larger tournament, but we have done this in the past. We’ve done the Wells Fargo for years and years, so we have a good idea of what to expect. But this brings it up to a different level."
Gleneagles Road will be closed to through traffic.
between Quail Hollow Road and Park Road from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day of the tournament. A noticeable increase in traffic is expected to begin next Thursday.
CMPD says there will be additional officers from all over the city staffed next week to work in the South Division.
Medic will also be on hand during the event. Medic officials say attendees should remember to hydrate before entering—only one unopened water bottle can be brought into the event.
