The Democratic National Convention was held in Charlotte Sept. 4-6, 2012. WFAE's comprehensive coverage of the event is found here.

Parking Garages To Accommodate Monthly Parkers During DNC

The DNC will keep many workers away from Uptown.  For those people who can't stay away, parking will be short.  But if you have a monthly parking pass chances are you'll have a space.

Several parking garages will be closed during the DNC.  Ben Pai wasn't surprised his usual place isn't available.  After all, it's right across the street from Time Warner Arena.  But that's not a problem since his employer Bank of America asked him to work from home.

"Honestly, I did not want to come downtown for that week, dealing with the crowds and traffic and so forth," says Pai.

But many people will have to venture uptown for work.  City officials are encouraging people to take public transit to avoid delays and also the hassle of finding a place to park.

Monthly parkers will have it easier in that regard.  Parking garages that remain open during the DNC will continue taking monthly parkers.  And those that are closing are re-locating monthly parkers to other lots they own.

Daily parkers aren't so lucky.  They'll likely pay more.  Many parking lots will raise their daily rates to between $20 and $35 dollars.
