Charlotte Observer

A tractor-trailer overturned on a Union County Sheriff’s Office patrol car Wednesday morning in Monroe, killing one person, according to authorities.

Police and other agencies investigating the wreck have not said whether the victim was in the truck or in the patrol car.

The crash was reported shortly after 7 a.m. on westbound U.S. 74 at Sutherland Avenue. That is near CMC-Union Hospital. According to authorities, a tractor-trailer collided with the back of a tanker truck and overturned, landing on top of the patrol car.

WBTV, the Observer’s media partner, and several other sources are reporting that one person died in the wreck.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said it is investigating the collision and is bringing in a special accident reconstruction team to determine a cause. The Union County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Sheriff Eddie Cathey is at the scene.

The N.C. Department of Transportation said at 8:45 a.m. that westbound U.S. 74 is closed at N.C. 200. Westbound motorists are being detoured onto East Franklin Street, into downtown Monroe, and back on Skyway Drive to U.S. 74.

Eastbound motorists are being detoured at Secrest Avenue. Motorists should use Ansonville Road back to U.S. 74.
