Officers Shoot And Kill Armed Man In Monroe

Officers shot and killed an armed man last night at a business in Monroe.

The Union County Sheriff's Office says a deputy tried to pull a white Pontiac Bonneville over around midnight because the tail lights were out.  The driver sped off and eventually pulled into the parking lot of the Dairy Queen on Roosevelt Boulevard.

The sheriff’s office says the man, who has been identified as 25-year-old Joshua Stubbs, then got out of the vehicle armed with a shotgun and ran into a nearby MetroPCS, which officers then surrounded.  After a standoff lasting about 20 minutes, the sheriff’s office says Stubbs came to the door of the business with the gun in hand and refused to drop the weapon. Officers then shot him. Stubbs later died at a hospital.

Four Union County Sheriff’s Deputies and one Monroe Police Officer are on paid administrative leave following the shooting.  Local law enforcement has asked the State Bureau of Investigation to conduct an investigation of the shooting, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.

Marshall came to WFAE after graduating from Appalachian State University, where he worked at the campus radio station and earned a degree in communication. Outside of radio, he loves listening to music and going to see bands - preferably in small, dingy clubs.
