Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz says focused on national security and immigration yesterday during a stop in Fort Mill, SC.
Cruz said he would stop illegal immigration as president. Among his strategies: Force “sanctuary” cities to take a financial hit.
“There are about 360 jurisdictions in this country that are sanctuary jurisdictions. Every one of them will find their federal taxpayer dollars cut off," Cruz said.
Legislation that would do just that failed in the U.S. Senate last year. Cruz did not say how he would be able to overcome Congress.
Sanctuary cities have policies that generally prohibit law enforcement from asking people their immigration status. Supporters argue the policies encourage trust and cooperation with law enforcement.
Charlotte, Raleigh and Chapel Hill are among cities that have carried out sanctuary policies. Governor McCrory signed legislation last fall that prohibits local governments from enacting such policies.
Cruz made several stops Friday and Saturday in South Carolina. His Fort Mill stop was at Morningstar Fellowship Church. The Republican Primary in South Carolina is February 20.
