NC Gets Share Of Multi-State Sirius XM Settlement

If you’ve had problems with Sirius XM radio’s customer service, this bit of news might make you happy. The company has agreed to pay nearly $4 million to settle complaints brought by most of the country’s attorneys general. North Carolina will get a slice of that money.  Greg Collard reports.

If you’ve ever done a quick search for complaints about Sirius XM, you’re familiar with the problems the settlement addresses: Contracts renewed without consent, difficulty canceling service, unauthorized fees, misrepresenting the conditions of service contracts. You get the idea. Just treating customers terribly.

For that, Sirius XM satellite radio is paying $3.8 million to settle complaints in 44 states and the District of Columbia. The company also has to change its behavior, such as clearly disclosing terms and making it easier to cancel service.

North Carolina’s share of the settlement is $101,429.

The settlement covers problems that go back to July 28th, 2008. Anyone who wants a refund – including people who have already filed complaints - must file a claim with the attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division by May 3rd. A spokeswoman in the attorney general’s office says it logged 138 complaints against Sirius XM before the settlement announcement.
