Multiple Schools On Lockdown As Police Investigate Shooting In South Charlotte

Three CMS schools were placed on lockdown for more than six hours as police investigated a shooting near the Quail Corners Shopping Center that occurred around 8 a.m. Thursday morning.

CMS says South Mecklenburg High, Quail Hollow Middle, and Smithfield Elementary were all placed on lockdown around 8:15 a.m. and remained on lockdown until end-of-day dismissal.

While students at Quail Hollow and Smithfield were allowed to carry out normal class schedules within the school, students at South Meck were required to remain in the same classroom for the entire six hours, according to a CMS spokesperson. All after school activities were canceled at the three schools.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Catholic High School briefly carried out "lock-in" procedures Thursday morning, heightening security and checking anyone who entered the building, according to a school receptionist.

According to an initial investigation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say a 17-year-old was shot in the leg on the 2700 block of Hamlin Park Drive. The teenager reportedly told police he was shot by an unknown person.

The teenager was brought to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say they have assigned additional CMPD officers to the nearby schools and surrounding neighborhoods.
