Mecklenburg County Manager Doesn't Expect Revaluation Next Year

Mecklenburg County Manager Harry Jones says he believes commissioners will hold off on re-valuing property until at least 2010. Jones told a group of district 3 residents it was unlikely the board will approve a property re-assessment for next year. Several dozen people attended the meeting last night to find out how a revaluation next year could affect their tax bills. Frank Weldon lives in the Hidden Valley neighborhood and would likely face a higher bill if a re-valuation went through. He's retired and says in this economy it would be a blessing to make it through next year without a re-assessment. "It'll make a big difference. Give us a chance to recoup some money and things like that," says Weldon. Some commissioners are still undecided. They point out some people are paying taxes based on property values that are too high, while others are underpaying. The last re-valuation was in 2003. Since then property values across the county have grown by about 20%. Commissioners are expected to vote on the matter after the new board takes over December 1st.
