Man Shot To Death On E. Independence Blvd., In City's 55th Homicide Of 2017

Updated 5:38 p.m.
Police say they have no suspects in a fatal shooting Tuesday night in southeast Charlotte. CMPD officers were called to east Independence Boulevard near Wallace Road around 7:20 p.m., where they found a 25-year-old man dead of gunshot wounds in a vehicle.

On Wednesday afternoon, police identified the man as Kyyri De Ji Marquis Doggette.

CMPD Captain Chris Dozier said Wednesday morning it likely wasn’t a robbery, or random.

“We don’t know if the victim knew the suspect, but at this time it doesn’t appear to be a random act,” Dozier said.

It was the 55th homicide in Charlotte so far this year.  At this time last year, there were 33.

It also was the latest in a series of recent homicides where victims were shot in their vehicles along East Independence. Dozier said police don't think they're related.

Last Thursday, a 43-year-old man was found shot to death in a car on Fugate Avenue, also off East Independence Boulevard. The car had crashed into a power pole. That homicide is still under investigation.

And on July 24, a 17-year-old man was shot while driving on McMullen Way. He was able to drive a short distance onto Monroe Road before stopping. The victim died two days later. Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the shooting.
