Madeleine Albright has always been a trailblazer. In 1997 she became the nation's first female Secretary of State, serving under President Bill Clinton. On that day Madam Albright became the highest ranking woman in the history of the U.S. government. But Dr. Albright was far more than a symbol of female empowerment. She guided U.S. foreign relations with a firm and steady hand often taking on dictators and despots. Despite her tough style, one of the Secretary's tools of diplomacy was uniquely feminine. Madam Albright collected a wide array of decorative pins and she wore them in what was sometimes a most calculated manner. The story of Secretary Albright's pins is told in an exhibit at the Mint Museum called Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright Story, but Secretary Albright tells the story in her own words, when Charlotte Talks.
