The Mad Monster Party Hosts Zombies, Gore And William Shatner

The creepy, the gruesome and the odd will all be on display this weekend at the Mad Monster Party in Charlotte. The guest list is eclectic.  It includes horror movie actors, special effects gurus, as well as William Shatner, Hulk Hogan, Henry Winkler and 80s star Corey Feldman.

Think horror, science-fiction and a little wrestling all wrapped into one weekend and you’ve got the Monster Party.

Tony Jones came down from Virginia to see old friends, meet other horror fans, and check out Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira. She’ll be decked out in her signature tight, black, low-cut dress from her stint as the 1980s horror hostess.

But really his tastes are more old school like Lon Chaney and Bela Lugosi.

“I think the older stuff left more to the imagination than actually seeing it and your imagination is probably your worst enemy because you always imagine the worst,” says Jones.

The typical fan uniform is jeans and a black horror movie t-shirt.  But Will Bozarth has got that beat.   His favorite actor is Vincent Price and he has the tattoo of him to prove it.  A bit further down on his arm is a striking likeness of Twilight Zone creator Rod Serling.

“My earliest memory is literally of a Twilight zone episode.  By the time I was five I was watching Poltergeist, Monster Squad, Pet Sematery, stuff that children shouldn’t really be watching,” says Bozarth.

He’ll be sure to catch the Twilight Zone panel that includes Serling’s daughter and William Shatner who appeared in a couple episodes.

Lisa Worf traded the Midwest for Charlotte in 2006 to take a job at WFAE. She worked with public TV in Detroit and taught English in Austria before making her way to radio. Lisa graduated from University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in English.
