Local News Roundup: Dylann Roof Verdict, NC General Assembly Special Sessions, CMS Superintendent

Aired on Friday, December 16, 2016

A verdict in the case of the shooter of the AME Emanuel Church tragedy in Charleston; special sessions and many bills proposed at the North Carolina General Assembly; and a new Superintendent for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Mike Collins and the local news roundup panel tackle those and other stories on this Friday's panel.

On this edition of the news roundup, Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools have a new superintendent in Dr. Clayton Wilcox, who is currently in a school district serving Hagerstown, Maryland. The pick ended a long search that was more private than other CMS Superintendent searches have been in recent history. We’ll discuss what we know about Dr. Wilcox and try to get an idea for what his priorities might be for the district.

The Dylan Roof trial continued this week with closing arguments on Thursday. We’ll go over some of the details of the case, including survivor accountsof the alleged attack at AME Emanuel Church in Charleston and what we might expect in sentencing if there is a guilty verdict.

The state legislature went into special session this week  introducing a number of bills, including a quickly-passed disaster relief bill, and about two dozen others, and at least some of those seem aimed at limiting the power of  incoming governor Roy Cooper. We discuss some of the bills and possible motivation behind the sessions.

And, recently released census data shows that the number of Mecklenburg County residents living in poverty is now up to 15%, a 2% increase from previous data. The jump includes a growing number of low-income residents in area suburbs.

Host Mike Collins and guests will take a look at those stories and much more on the Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup, this morning at 9 on 90.7 WFAE.
