Abraham Lincoln changed millions of lives and the course of history with the Emancipation Proclamation. But did he free the slaves to punish the south? To win the war? Or out of moral obligation? Long a point of argument among historians, UNC Charlotte’s John David Smith believes that Lincoln underwent a metamorphosis in his thinking that allowed him to make a move that also added to the ranks of Union soldiers.
