Lawmaker Who Defeated Sanford In 'Critical, But Stable' Condition After Serious Car Crash

Katie Arrington's Campaign
Rep. Katie Arrington

South Carolina lawmaker and congressional candidate Katie Arrington is expected to remain hospitalized for at least two more weeks from injuries sustained in a car accident Friday night.

Through a twitter statement, Arrington’s spokesperson said the representative has suffered fractures to her back and has several broken ribs after undergoing surgery to “remove a portion of her small intestine and a portion of her colon.”

A vehicle going the wrong way on U.S. Highway 17 Friday night struck Arrington’s car. The driver of the other vehicle died. Arrington and a friend, Jacqueline Goff, were heading to Hilton Head, SC. Goff is also hospitalized.

Arrington, who defeated incumbent Congressman Mark Sanford in the June 12 Republican primary, is in critical but stable condition, according to hertwitter account. She will require additional surgeries, however, including a leg stent.

Sanford linked to a story of the crash on twitter, and added his “thoughts and prayers” go to Arrington and all involved in the accident.

Arrington repeatedly highlighted Sanford’s criticism of President Trump in her primary campaign. Trump said he “fully” endorsed Arrington, saying she “is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes.”

In a tweetSaturday morning, Trump also said his thoughts and prayers are with Arrington.

Meanwhile, Arrington’s Democratic opponent, Joe Cunningham posted a statement on Twitter Saturday morning, announcing he is “suspending all campaign activities until further notice.”
