The Charlotte Observer's publisher McClatchy is eliminating 1,400 jobs between the 29 papers the company owns. The publisher says a 15% drop in ad revenue forced its hand. The Observer has announced it's cutting 11% of its staff. The newsroom will lose 22 positions, leaving just over 200 employees in that department. UNC Journalism Professor Phil Meyer has studied how newspapers are coping as circulation and advertising decline. WFAE's Lisa Miller spoke to him about the impact these cuts will have on coverage of the Charlotte area.
