Immigration Court Opening in Charlotte

Currently, immigration cases from the Carolinas are heard in Atlanta. Next month, those cases will start to be heard in Charlotte. Long-time Charlotte immigration attorney Cynthia Aziz says it will make a big difference. "For our clients it's going to logistically make it more feasible for them to have local attorneys and their transportation to Atlanta is something they're not going to miss," she says. Having the court nearby will make it easier to afford an attorney. The Latin American Coalition's immigration coordinator Adriana Galvez-Taylor says some clients have not sought legal help because going to Atlanta means travel costs, plus missed work. The court also has the support of local law enforcement who wanted the ability to process illegal immigration cases more quickly.
