An illegal immigrant convicted two years ago of plotting to kidnap two young girls in Cornelius and then demand a ransom, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
Prosecutors say 26-year-old Ruben Garcia-Rosario continuously watched the two young girls from his car as they waited for their school bus. Garcia-Rosario tried to get help from a translator to write a ransom note to the family of the girls, threatening to kill them if they didn't give into his demands.
Authorities say the plot was stopped when someone came forward with information about the plan. Garcia-Rosario has been in federal custody for the past two years. The Charlotte Observer has more here.
