How NC Job Growth Compares To Other States

Bureau of Labor Statistics

The North Carolina Commerce Department announced Monday that the state's unemployment rate declined in March to 6.3 percent. A federal department also released data recently that show how North Carolina's job growth stacks up against other states.

North Carolina added more jobs in March than any state other than Florida. That's according to data the U.S. Labor Department released Friday.

Of course, North Carolina and Florida have bigger populations than a lot of states, so here's another way to look at it: North Carolina tied for the largest percentage increase in employment – half a percent more North Carolinians were employed in March than the month before. South Carolina also tied for that lead.

Looking at growth over the past year, North Carolina doesn't stack up as well. The federal data show that 1.6 percent more North Carolinians had jobs in March compared to a year ago. That's solid but not as strong as South Carolina, where employment grew 2 percent.

And the top states in the country for employment growth were North Dakota and Nevada. Employment increased in both of those states more than twice as fast as it did in North Carolina.
