New Charlotte Hornets general manager Mitch Kupchak announced the team had dismissed head coach Steve Clifford after another underwhelming season.
In a statement, Kupchak thanked Clifford for his contributions.
“I know he has worked incredibly hard on behalf of the organization and we wish him the best moving forward," Kupchak said. "The search for a new coach will begin immediately.”
Clifford had been with the Hornets since 2013. He finishes his tenure with a 196-214 regular season record and just two playoff appearances.
The Hornets finished the year 36-46 before Clifford's dismissal.
In February, Hornets chairman Michael Jordan announced the team would not extend the contract of former general manager Rich Cho, leading to Kupchak's hiring. Cho had led the organization for the past seven years.
