From Health Care To HB2: Analysis Of Early Going For Trump, Cooper

Monday, March 27, 2017

There’s a lot going on in Washington and Raleigh. We have a new president and a new governor and both are finding things a bit of a slog. Three political scientists reflect on it all.

As confirmation hearings wrap up for Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch, Senate Democrats say they will filibuster his nomination.

The GOP health care bill may be in limbo as Republicans in Congress and the White House haggle over a deal to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act.

The battle over health care has pitted Republicans against each other, with the House Freedom Caucus gaining traction and votes against the bill, which NC Congressman and leader of the caucus Mark Meadows calls "Obamacare Lite." On the other side, fellow NC Congressman Patrick McHenry is tasked with whipping up support for the bill.

Here in North Carolina, the state's most infamous law, House Bill 2, just saw its first anniversary and yetanother attempt to repeal it fell flat.

Democratic Governor Roy Cooper's tenure so far has gotten him about as far with the state's Republican legislature as President Trump has gotten with Congress. The Governor hasn’t been able to get the General Assembly to budge on HB2 and attempts to limit his power have made for frosty relations.

A few months into new leadership in the White House and the Governor's mansion, we get an early performance assessment during the first 100 days of two new administrations. Mike Collins talks with three political scientists about the latest in national and state politics.
