Seventy-five new jobs are coming to Gaston County. Tosaf USA plans to locate its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Bessemer City. Tosaf’s parent company is based in Israel and makes polymers and compounds that are used in the automotive, medical, and other industries. Tosaf plans to invest 13.1 million dollars in the Gaston County facility and fill the 75 anticipated jobs within five years.
USC Blocked From Kicking Kappa Sigma Out Of Fraternity House
A judge has temporarily blocked the University of South Carolina from kicking members of the Kappa Sigma fraternity out of their housing. The fraternity’s national office imposed a five-year ban on the USC chapter last month, over alleged hazing and alcohol violations and unapproved spending. Media reports say the owner of the Kappa Sigma house in Columbia won a temporary court order to halt the evictions, which had been ordered by Sunday. The local chapter is appealing the national fraternity organization’s ban, and a hearing is scheduled for February.
New Life Fore Savannah River Site Fuel Project
A newly-approved spending bill in the U.S. House could breathe new life into the mixed-oxide fuel project at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. The project to turn nuclear weapons material into commercial reactor fuel has faced delays and cost overruns, and the Obama Administration wants to put construction on hold. But a spending measure approved in the House yesterday would provide funding through next fall. The overall trillion dollar spending bill still needs Senate approval.
Teens Death Investigated By FBI
A prosecutor in southeastern North Carolina says the FBI is looking into the hanging death of a black teenager. The state medical examiner ruled the August death of 17-year old Lennon Lacy a suicide. His body was found hanging from a swing set. But family members questioned the medical examiner’s ruling, and the county coroner says he’s no longer sure the death was a suicide. Bladen County District Attorney Jon David confirmed that an FBI agent has been assigned to the case.
Equipment Installed At SC Prison To Prevent Smuggling
South Carolina prison officials say new equipment is being installed at a maximum security facility in Bishopville, where they say someone used a drone to try to smuggle contraband to inmates. A man was arrested in July after authorities say he attempted to smuggle cell phones, cigarettes and marijuana into the Lee Correctional Institute. Officials found the drone and contraband in bushes outside the prison. The new security measures include two surveillance towers and thermal imaging cameras.
